In this interview, we introduce Mindfield Biosystems, (a close partner of BioNeuro Ltd.) and Mindfield company's manager, Mr. Niko Rockensüß. Please welcome! - Interview by Bertrand Chauvin N.

What is your profession? We've read, that you studied biology and psychology?
I have studied biology, neurobiology at the Freie Universität Berlin and hold a Master degree in Biology. I did my master thesis at the Max Plank Institute for Cognitive Neurosciece in Leipzig with already a study of Neurofeedback and how it affects the brain in fMRI/MRI measurements. I also had courses in biopsychology and behavioral psychology during my study time. In 2014, I also got the degree of a "Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapie" a special German profession and education program for psychotherapists. So I am also able and allowed to open up a practice and treat patients with all methods of psychotherapy, in my case the behavioral therapy. I was working from 2014 - 2018 in a practive with patients and treated them with Biofeedback, Neurofeedback and behavioral psychotherapy at 1-2 days a week. I ended working in a practice in 2018, as my son was born and I fully focused on Mindfield afterwards.
When, why and how did you start Mindfield?
I founded the company Mindfield Biosystems Ltd. in 2003, together with a friend from school and build it up during my study time and onwards then in full time. In 2006 I met a partner, who is still involved in Mindfield, an ergotherapists who helped building up the company. I became interested in Biofeedback and Neurofeedback in these days and met also a hardware engineer who is still active in our company now since nearly 20 years and responsible for manyproducts we have. Today, after 20 years, we are a leading full service Biofeedback and Neurofeedback developer and supplier within Germany, with a team of engineers, software developers and therapists & trainers. Our products are used in many countries, by famous partners like UCLA, Stanford, Harvard University, many clinics, researchers and mostly therapists and trainers for daily usage of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback training. We continuosly develope new products, improve our existing products and extend our service. Very constant and with great success.
My wife is an ergotherapist and biofeedback neurofeedback trainer. We are working in our private praxis with various eSense products and also medical devices. The eSense devices are not medical devices, they are in the category home devices. Are the eSense products used in clinics? If yes, where? NOTE: always the manufacturer decides if a product is medical device or home device. It is more a question of distribution field. The category does not reflect the quality.
Yes, we provide the eSense products to a wide range of hospitals, clinics and private praxis also. For example in Germany and Austria our recent partners are: Mühlenkreis Kliniken, Waldburg-Zeil Kliniken, Rhön Klinikum, Wels-Grieskirchen Klinikum, Rheuma Kinderklinik, Universitätsklinikum Ulm, Schön Klinik Gruppe and many more. Most of our clients we meet at exhibitions or we are recommended from an establishment.
Why did you develop the EEGenius device? What is the background?
The Mindfield® eSense EEGenius is a new, state-of-the-art EEG device for home neurofeedback training. It was developed specifically for easy, intuitive use by end users after extensive planning and testing. We devoloped it for home use in addition to existing concepts of Neurofeedback in practices but also just for private end users to improve their brain. Using Neurofeedback Hometaining, a user can perform EEG-based training in a private environment. Many patients feel more comfortable and a better training can be achived in their private ambiance.
The EEGenius provides only one or more training protocols?
Different targets can be selected:
Improvement of attention and concentration
Improvement of cognitive skills
Training of calmness, composure and relaxation
Reduction of restlessness and nervousness
Improving the quality of sleep
In case you live in the countryside and you don't find a neurofeedback trainer in your area, what do you offer to a patient, what are the possibilities?
The pre-made, included training programs are oriented to the goals i mentioned before, but it is also possible for so-called supervisors, professionals for example like a psychologist who can supervise end user (patient) – to create and evaluate their own, user-specific training protocols. During training, different displays and requirements provide motivation and analyses provide information about the training progress.
