About Skin Conductance Biofeedback (SCB) in general

Skin conductance biofeedback (SCB) is a therapeutic technique that measures and utilizes changes in the electrical conductivity of the skin as a means of providing individuals with real-time insights into their physiological and psychological state. This method is primarily based on the principles of electrodermal activity (EDA), which reflects how the body's sympathetic nervous system responds to emotional stimuli, stress, and anxiety. - Credit: AAPB

Key Aspects of Skin Conductance Biofeedback 1. Understanding Skin Conductance:

   - The skin's electrical conductivity changes with sweat gland activity, which is influenced by arousal states caused by emotions, thoughts, and environmental factors.

   - When an individual experiences stress, anxiety, or excitement, their sympathetic nervous system activates, leading to increased sweat production. This, in turn, increases skin conductance (the ability of the skin to conduct electricity).- AAPB

2. Measurement:

   - SCB uses sensors placed on the skin (typically on the fingers or palms) to measure changes in skin conductance. These measurements are recorded as electrical signals.

   - The data is usually displayed on a screen, allowing individuals to see real-time feedback about their physiological responses. - AAPB

3. Personal Awareness:

   - One of the primary goals of skin conductance biofeedback is to help individuals develop greater awareness of their physiological reactions to stressors and emotional stimuli.

   - By providing real-time feedback, SCB can teach individuals how to recognize signs of stress and arousal in their bodies, promoting self-regulation. - AAPB

4. Applications:

   - Stress Management: SCB can be used in stress reduction programs, helping individuals learn how to manage anxiety and stress by developing relaxation techniques based on physiological feedback.

   - Therapeutic Settings: Used in psychological therapy, SCB can assist individuals in understanding their emotional responses and developing coping strategies.

   - Performance Enhancement: Athletes and performers may use SCB to improve focus and emotional regulation during high-pressure situations. - AAPB

5. Techniques Used:

   - Relaxation Training: Individuals may be guided through relaxation exercises (like deep breathing, visualization, or mindfulness) while monitoring their skin conductance. This helps them learn effective techniques to reduce arousal and stress responses.

   - Self-Regulation Skills: Through practice, individuals can learn to consciously influence their physiological responses to stress, improving their ability to remain calm and focused. - AAPB

6. Research Support:

   - Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of skin conductance biofeedback for various applications, notably in reducing anxiety, improving emotional regulation, and enhancing relaxation.

   - The efficacy of SCB may vary based on individual differences, the specific techniques used, and the context in which it is applied. - AAPB

IN SUMMARY:

Skin conductance biofeedback is a valuable tool for increasing self-awareness and promoting emotional and physiological self-regulation. By providing real-time data about the body's responses to stressors, SCB empowers individuals to develop coping strategies that can lead to improved mental and physical health. As with any therapeutic approach, working with a trained professional knowledgeable in biofeedback is essential to achieve the best outcomes. - Credit: AAPB

Skin Conductance Measurement with the eSense Skin Response!

The Mindfield eSense Skin Response Biofeedback is a small sensor to measure your skin response using the microphone input of your smartphone or tablet (Android or Apple iOS). Skin resistance is related to tension and relaxation and is a common stress indicator. With the eSense Skin Response, you are able to measure your stress level and effectively reduce it using biofeedback training. Skin response measurement was never so easy and quick. The eSense Biofeedback device provides the user with precise feedback on the current stress level in a variety of forms, e.g. measurement curves, diagrams, video and audio displays. Thus, you can easily measure your skin conductance and immediately get an easy-to-understand feedback on your device. For audio biofeedback, the device uses the audio output of your smartphone or tablet. In addition to the audio feedback, you can also listen to music or audio books during anti-stress training! The eSense Skin Response Biofeedback is the perfect device for skin conductance measurement.

Skin Conductance

Skin response, also known as galvanic skin response (GSR), electrodermal response (EDR) or skin conductance (SC) is a method for measuring the skin’s electrical conductance, which varies with its moisture level. Conductance is measured in µSiemens (µS) and is the inverse of electrical resistance. The measurement of skin conductance provides you with important insights into your body’s stress reactions and your nervous system. This enables you to specifically optimize your physical condition. An individual training, perfectly adapted to your body and your needs. The eSense Skin Response measures skin conductance between two Velcro electrodes attached to the index- and middle fingers. Active measurement involves applying a very low, unnoticeable voltage to the fingers.

Skin conductance measurement in µSiemens with the eSense Skin Response. Two electrodes are placed on the index and middle finger for this purpose. A low, completely harmless voltage is applied to the skin via the two electrodes of the eSense Skin Response, over which a very low current flows. The more tense or stressed you are, the moister the skin becomes and the better the current is conducted, so the skin conductance increases as a result. Thus, with the eSense Skin Response, you can easily measure skin response at any time and get instant biofeedback from your body. This easy application is suitable for any age group.

Significance of Skin Conductance and Biofeedback-Training

In a professional, therapeutic context, skin conductance training is the preferred biofeedback training method for anxiety, panic and learning relaxation. The sweat glands are controlled by the vegetative (sympathetic) nervous system and react directly to the smallest emotional, physical or mental changes. A rise in skin conductance is clearly visible under the influence of stress. Stress factors may be, for example, mental activity, emotional arousal, deep inhalation or frightening. Even the smallest changes are made visible with the aid of the app, and can be used for biofeedback training to reduce stress. A detailed introduction is included in the free app. Start now your skin response measurement and get immediate biofeedback in stress.

Quick Biofeedback Neurofeedback User Guide

  • When you buy the eSense skin response you can download our free app from the App Store (Apple®) or Google Play (Android). (You can also download it in advance, but the app can not be effectively used without the sensor)

  • Fix the two velcro electrodes around your index- and middle fingers.

  • Combine the eSense Skin Response with the microphone jack of your mobile device, and with the velcro electrodes.

  • Start the app and click “Start”, the measurements will begin.

  • Please carefully read the instructions within the app to get the best out of biofeedback training.

  • P.S. You can re-order velcro electrodes in our shop, but they are durable and can be re-used many times.

Skin conductance offers a promising new way to measure emotional states, bypassing the limitations of facial recognition. In an experiment, volunteers watched videos evoking fear, humor, and family bonding while their skin’s electrical properties were recorded.

The analysis revealed unique patterns in the speed and duration of conductance changes linked to different emotions, like fear lasting the longest. These findings suggest that combining such signals with other measures could enable emotionally aware technologies, enhancing how devices understand and respond to human feelings.

Key Facts:

  • Skin conductance changes within 1-3 seconds of an emotional stimulus.

  • Fear responses lasted longer, potentially due to evolutionary advantages.

  • Conductance dynamics can statistically predict emotions like fear or bonding.

Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University have used measurements of skin conductance over time to tell emotions apart. Volunteers were shown videos depicting fearful scenes, family bonding, and humor, while their skin conductance trace was recorded. The team’s analysis showed that traces could be used to make good guesses of which emotions were being felt. Read more
